Cleanings, fluoride and sealants

A checkup and cleaning keeps an eye on new teeth, removes plaque and gives you a plan for brushing at home.

Dr. Chandran advises how often to come, from what she sees in your child's mouth. Many children come about every six months.

At this visit

  • A look at teeth, gums and bite

  • A cleaning with a small brush and a flavor your child picks

  • Fluoride or sealants if she advises them

A smiling dental team member talks with a girl in a dental chair who is holding a plush bunny and a toothbrush

What happens

  1. 01

    Step 1: A look and a count

The hygienist and Dr. Chandran look at teeth, gums and how the bite fits together.

  2. 02

    Step 2: A cleaning

Plaque comes off with a small brush and polish. Your child picks the flavor and can hold the mirror.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Fluoride or sealants

If she advises them, fluoride goes on in a minute or two. A sealant is a thin coating painted on the grooves of a back tooth.

  4. 04

    Step 4: A brushing talk

Your child shows how they brush, and we suggest small changes for you both.

Comfort, waiting and after-care

  • Comfort

Cleanings need no numbing. Each tool is shown first, and a raised hand means stop.

  • If you wait

Plaque left on teeth can lead to cavities and sore gums. Fluoride and sealants are Dr. Chandran’s advice for your child, not a routine, and you can ask why.

  • Risks and after-care

She explains how much fluoride is right at your child’s age and what to do if a child swallows too much. A sealant can wear down, so we check it at each visit.

  • How it is billed

Cleanings, fluoride and sealants are billed to your plan if you have one. Without a plan, you get a written estimate first.
